Biography

Dimitrios Zekkos is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. He is also the CEO of ARGO-E, an infrastructure data analytics firm based in California, and a Board Member of Elxis Group, an engineering consulting company based in Athens, Greece. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer in California and Greece.  Dimitrios received his undergraduate degree from the University of Patras and a MSc and PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 2002 and 2005 respectively. He has previously worked for a consulting company in California and was an Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Zekkos devises and employs unique experimental and computational approaches to characterize the response of infrastructure and geo-systems to natural hazards and environmental stressors such as climate change. He has deployed in disaster-affected areas following earthquake events in Japan, New Zealand, Nepal, Greece and USA where he uses in-situ characterization techniques, including geophysics, and sensor-equipped Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, paired with laboratory testing and numerical analyses to better understand the full-scale response of infrastructure systems.  He has published more than 150 scientific publications and his research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), NASA, the World Bank, the USGS, the Michigan Department of Transportation, and other private organizations. His work has been recognized by ASCE through several awards including the Middlebrooks Award, Collingwood Prize and Casagrande Award by ASCE, as well as the Shamsher Prakash Research Award and the Outstanding Innovator Award by the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). Dr. Zekkos is also presently chair of the Geoenvironmental Technical Committee of the ASCE Geo-Institute, chair of the Innovation and Development Committee of ISSMGE, and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Geoengineering Case Histories.
