Invited Lecture – In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) of sediment in saline environment at the Gowanus Canal, Brooklyn, NY

In order to prevent upward mobile liquid tar, present in the native sediment of the Gowanus Canal, from moving into the overlying treatment cap which is intended for addressing the dissolved phase contamination, ISS of the sediment was included in the remedy. This presentation discusses the methodologies used for determining the criteria for upward mobile tar and for applying these criteria to map out the areas of the canal bottom that require ISS. The implementation of the ISS, recently completed in the upper portion of the canal, and site-specific challenges will also be discussed.
